tetromino 's review for:
St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves
by Karen Russell
"I wonder, briefly, if I could eat Brauser if it came to that. At this point, we have been alone on the glacier for 14 minutes."
I also kind of struggle with Karen Russell, I actually hadn't realized she wrote another book I read until I started this one and noticed they were rather similar. Like all short story collections it's hard to judge because I really only want to judge it based on the stories I liked, and not all of them were very impactful to me. I liked the one about minotaur dad, I liked the girls raised by wolves, and I liked the avalanche story. Similar to the other story collection I often just feel like the stories just end. I know short stories can be like that, but I think of short stories I love like "Confessions of a Shinagawa Monkey" and I don't feel that same sense of "oh, it's over." Definitely some of the stories here are more successful than others but overall I just like the collection okay. At times, though, some beautiful prose! And I enjoyed that They Might Be Giants reference, lol.
