The Heir by Kiera Cass
5.0

The Heir is the fourth book in the Selection series. In all honesty, Ms. Cass’ Selection series is my guilty pleasure that I cannot get enough of. It’s fun, witty, and charming. Throughout the whole series I was rooting for Team Maxon. After The One came out, I was sad that the series was coming to an end. However, once I heard news that there would be a fourth book, I was more than excited to read this book.

The Heir takes place twenty years after Maxon and America end up together. During those twenty years the caste system has been dissolved, but there are some riots breaking out due to discrimination. America and Maxon have four childen: Eadlyn, Ahren, Kaden, and Osten. Due to the riots, America and Maxon decide the country needs some diversion and force Eadlyn into a selection. Eadlyn is reluctant because she feels that she can one day be queen with no one as her companion. She is headstrong and stubborn, just like her mother.

Eadlyn decides that she will scare the boys away and make the selection end sooner than what everyone wants, but she promises Maxon she will do it for three months and if she gets to the three months, she can decide if she does not want to marry.

Throughout the first bit of the book I was a little annoyed at Eadlyn because she wasn’t being open minded and not trying to see what everyone is saying that if she gives it a chance she will learn to fall in love. Throughout the whole book I feel like her heart is locked up in a cage where no one has access to it, but does give some of the men glances at her heart.

I also wish that there were some physical description about America and Maxon. I want to know what they look like now that they are in their late thirties, early forties. It was kind of weird to see them in a different perspective and called Mom and Dad. It was interesting.

The story was enjoyable and I found myself laughing, swooning, and feeling sympathetic for some of these suitors. Now, I really want to know who Eadlyn chooses. All the men that she has spent quality time, I love. I cannot choose and I can see that in the next book Eadlyn will have a hard choice.
