The Matzah Ball by Jean Meltzer
3.0

I really wanted to like this one more, but I was disappointed. I didn't think there was much chemistry between Rachel and Jacob, the two leads, so I wasn't really invested in their relationship. I found it a little hard to believe that one summer when they were 12 had this much of an effect on them that they were able to fall in love so quickly as adults. I also found the number of times summer camp was mentioned to be a little much. I know it was important to them (and the plot), but the sheer number of times the camp was named and came up in conversation seemed unrealistic and a little silly, in my opinion. I also thought the main conflict between the two leads was a little unbelievable because it stemmed from a minor misunderstanding that happened, yet again, at summer camp.

I did like that this was very much a Jewish romance. Even with a heroine who loves Christmas and secretly has an alter ego as a Christmas romance novelist (that was a fun character quirk), the book was undoubtedly and unapologetically Jewish. I learned a lot about Jewish culture from this book, which I really enjoyed, and it was really interesting to read a romance that is set so firmly in the Jewish world. I've read several books with Jewish main characters, but never one where it was such a huge part of the plot (although, that could be because this is a Hanukkah book :D).

I also loved the disability rep! Rachel has chronic fatigue syndrome and it has a significant effect on her life. I don't personally know what it's like to have CFS, but I thought the portrayal was done well, and it was interesting to see that done in a romance novel and still have the heroine get her happy ending while not downplaying or romanticizing the effects of the disease.

I did think the ending wrapped up a little too quickly (despite the book being 10 hours long) and was a little neat, which added to my overall disappointment of the book. There were lots of high points, but just too many things that didn't quite work for me.
