First of all, I think I made a mistake in reading this book in the middle of August... I feel like I would have enjoyed it a lot more had I read it on a crisp autumn evening, maybe the with the smell of bonfire (or candyfloss) in the air... I can’t deny that the atmosphere of this book is PERFECT. The antithesis of Dandelion Wine, Something Wicked This Way Comes is the epitome of autumn, as two young boys feel the effect of a strange carnival that’s come to town...
.
Bradbury is one of the best at writing young boys, perfectly capturing the feelings of childhood and combining that with beautifully written musings on life, good and evil, and the relationship between father and son. I didn’t love this one as much as Dandelion Wine, which is odd because I’m much more an autumn gal than summer!
.
It possibly had something to do with the prose of this one. Most of the time the poetic writing was beautiful, but then every so often he’d go off on one, using a list of three adjectives where one would suffice, great big lists of compound nouns where you lose sight of the verb... It just made it a bit tricky to follow what was going on at times!
.
I think I’ll reread this one in some future autumn, because I don’t think I was in the mood to appreciate it fully! Sorry @jobis89 haha!
