Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman
2.0

I wasn't a huge fan of this book. I didn't know anything about it when I started reading, so maybe that had something to do with it? I was SO confused for so long. One quick chapter he's on a boat, then he's home, then suddenly he's in a kitchen in a nightmare, now he's back on the boat, but he's really not…he's really home. WHAT?!

Needless to say I had trouble following and when I got to page 20 I finally came to goodreads to check out the Q/A section and some of the reviews. I saw someone post, "I will say it takes a bit to get into, so keep reading even if you are confused. You're supposed to be a little confused." So I trudged on.

Overall, I thought it was interesting. The work and thought that must have gone into the writing, the storyline, and the organization of it all is quite amazing. I understand that this story was supposed to be confusing at first, but I just think if there was a bit more in the beginning that helps set the story, that would have helped me. It just started out so darn jumbled and it took a long time for me to get into it, which I really dislike in a book.

I'm still a bit confused about all the transitions...but I did like that you slowly see him making connections between his life on the sea and what was happening in real life.

My other notes:
I don’t like the chapter headers. Because of their font and the fact that they are sprinkled through the book rather than beginning on a new page, I find them distracting. I really don't like the font used (odd I know, but I have a thing with fonts after taking a Typography class). I also keep thinking that the splatter on the chapter numbers is a mess in the book and find myself absentmindedly trying to wipe it off.

The bit about Callie was super cute- I'm so glad they didn't over do that.

Favorite lines:
"Forget solar energy- if you could harness denial, it would power the world for generations."

"There are many ways in which the 'check brain' light illuminates, but here's the screwed up part: the driver can't see it. It's like the light is positioned in the backseat cup holder, beneath an empty can of soda that's been there for a month. No one sees it but the passengers- and only if they're really looking for it, or when the light gets so bright and so hot that it melts the can, and sets the whole car on fire."

"I used to be afraid of dying. Now I'm afraid of not living.”

“…it occurs to me that the dark must be in love with the light. Yet one must always kill the other."
