Broken Hollow: A Short Story by J.S. O'Connor
1.0

There was a lot of build-up to something, but the ending was not what I expected, and not in a good way.

This is extremely grim and I'm not positive I'd call it horror (or at least not the supernatural horror I thought I was picking up from the description), though it seems like one of those slow-burn horror stories I love when I started.

In addition to that, which is likely personal preference to some extent, the editing on this was legitimately terrible. Missed words, wrong words, terrible dialogue, and missing punctuation everywhere. I kept having to drag myself back into the story after I reread sentences like this twice to understand them:

"He sat on a log and put his hands in the palms of his hands and began to cry."

A quick run-through with even just Word would probably have cleared up the basic grammar stuff, and a beta reader could have caught a lot of the other errors.

I was hoping for more, since short horror stories have been something I've loved since I was a child, but this wasn't it, unfortunately.
