I loved the character of James, the way Ng makes him weak in himself yet strong to his family and the public, taking the time to flesh out a nuanced description. The absence of Lydia, the protagonist, creates a tense atmosphere. Always is the underlying sense of race, the hushed discussion that the family, and society at large, is not having.
