Oh, man. I rated Scythe 5 stars and went into this book super hyped for the rest of the series, but it's just been a complete meltdown. I'm writing this a week or so after finishing this book and DNFing The Toll, which I'm SO sad about. But before we get to that, let's focus on this book.
If there's one bookish pet peeve I have, it's when main characters are absent or separated during a series. I can't stand it, in almost any narrative form. Citra and Rowan were my favorite part of Scythe. This one starts with a small time jump, and though I was pleased with how quickly into the book they met up again, they literally didn't see each other again until the very end. Plus, Rowan's perspectives were too few and spaced out for my liking.
I was intrigued by the idea of the Thunderhead in the first book, but this one was just an onslaught. For one, I wasn't as interested in the chapter openings as I had been for Scythe. I wish there had been more variety, like the different Scythe journals from the first book. This book introduces Grayson Tolliver, a whole new POV that was entertaining at times but he also kind of took over the book, and I didn't like him as much as Citra or Rowan.
The ending was no doubt shocking and really entertaining, but it was one of the only consistently great part of the book for me. I was still very interested in seeing how The Toll went, albeit a bit hesitant.

Unfortunately, I was SO LET DOWN. I can handle random character POVs to an extent, but OH MY GOD. There were so many new characters in this book that I was TRUDGING through the beginning. I don't looove big time jumps, but I can feel like I could've handled this one if Citra and Rowan showed up earlier and I didn't have to suffer through a bunch of new characters, most of which were just random ass people! I made it through about 150 pages before I couldn't take it anymore and finally looked up the rest of the book. Uhhhh.... yeah there's no way I would've survived that. I would've been BORED OUT OF MY FRICKIN' MIND. I am fairly pleased with the actual ending but overall there's just no way I could've hung on and read the whole book without going insane. Ugh. What a disappointment after the greatness of the first book!
