Heroes: Mortals and Monsters, Quests and Adventures
by Stephen Fry
I really loved Stephen Fry's first Greek mythology book Mythos when I read it years ago. Despite buying Heroes as soon as it came out it has taken me a long time to get to actually reading it, but now that I have I very much want to continue on to the third book Troy. I enjoy Fry's chatty, entertaining writing style and obvious love of the myths he retells. His narration on the audiobook is great.
It does occasionally jar me when the myths are sanitised somewhat - for example Fry mentions Theseus abducting Helen, describing her as "young", but does not mention that she was a child, or that in some versions of the story he raped her. (Fry is not alone in this of course, many writers do it, and not only those writing for children.)
From my own knowledge of the myths (admittedly not expert), I get the impression Fry also has a tendency to choose the versions of myths most commonly known today, such as those depicted in famous plays; it might have been nice to see some alternate versions, many of which were well known in ancient times but less so today.
Despite those minor issues, I really enjoyed Heroes. Together with Mythos it is one of the most accessible modern retellings of ancient myths I have yet come across and I would definitely recommend the two to anyone who is looking for a good introduction to Greek mythology.
