Youngman: Selected Diaries of Lou Sullivan by Lou Sullivan, Zach Ozma, Ellis Martin
4.5
emotional funny hopeful informative inspiring lighthearted reflective sad slow-paced

The excitement and expectations I had for this book truly lived out and were met throughout my read of the entries! It's always wonderful news to find a representation of your deepest concerns as a gay trans man. Lou Sullivan was an incredibly relatable character—most specially to me, as a fellow gay trans man, as flawed as he was (because he was still human after all) and as much as I might not share some of his thoughts; his development as a person, as he grew older, as he transitioned, as he moved on from homes and partners and how all these instances revealed to him new information to piece his identity and personality together was interesting from beginning to end. Saddening how his life was cut short by the virus. Nonetheless, he was someone I'm keeping close to my heart for remembrance and gratefulness of his existence and activism for the (gay) FTM cause.

My only issues, and why I don't give it a full score, is because of little things I didn't like about the editing of this book; very much appreciate what was probably arduous work from the editors and the glossary at the back, but I would've loved to feel well-situated in time as I read through the entries by actually having the year or date somewhere around the texts.

Many memorable quotes, for sure. My favorites have got to be:

"I'm a communist transvenstite"

"(tired of my fat ass)"

"Finally! I feel like a gay man! I'm no longer a fucked-up female. Hallelujah! I'm now a fucked-up male!!"
