The Great Alone
by Kristin Hannah
There was a lot I liked about this book, but then there was a lot I didn't. I definitely enjoyed the first part the most. The descriptions of Alaska were lovely and I loved feeling the sense of friendship and community.
But this book also deals with some very heavy subjects and unfortunately I wasn't a big fan of the way those things were portrayed. I wish that we'd gotten more nuance or development for any of the characters that weren't Leni. The dad's character to me just felt so black and white, I don't understand why you'd make this story partially centered around PTSD without really delving into the subject at all. Same with mom's character, I've been in bad relationships before, I get why she stayed but I didn't empathize with her because I wasn't given the chance.
Near the end of the book it honestly kinda started to feel like trauma porn with everything piling on at once, idk. I guess some parts of this maybe just weren't for me. I know this seems like a lot of complaints, but I actually enjoyed the book. It had lovely writing and an interesting story, unfortunately the parts I didn't like were pretty distracting.
