The Scottish Boy
by Alex de Campi
Harry is an aspiring country knight in England in the 1330s. His life is changed when he finally achieves his dream of becoming a knight and is tasked with making a kidnapped Scottish boy his squire. Harry enters a world of secrets and passion as he learns who he can trust while falling in beautiful, disastrous love with the last person he should be with.
Harry was such a sweetheart. I wouldn't say it's a coming of age story, but it has similar themes where Harry is thrust into adulthood and realizes his dreams aren't so grand. I loved him and Iain together, even if they had a bumpy start. Iain needs someone like Harry who is pure goodness with no ulterior motives. Iain gives Harry confidence to become the best knight he can be while challenging and bewitching him at the same time. They're soulmates who could never give up on each other, even when all seemed lost.
My only complaint is the ending. I felt like I went on this long, complicated, intense journey and it was wrapped up pretty quickly. I loved the story, it was really intriguing and I kept wanting to see what would happen next. I just still have questions, and would've loved to see more of Iain and Harry living out their days in Dartington. A really interesting and unique read overall, I would definitely recommend if you love some enemies to lovers with a splash royal/political drama.
