Translation is an act of betrayal, as R. F. Kuang would say. I don’t think the translation did this any favors, but I feel like if I had read the original Spanish, I would have a better understanding of this hallucinatory book. It was kind-of incredible, and an important critique of national epics. But also, what the help did I just read??
