Boulder by Eva Baltasar
fast-paced

🌺🌺
I read Boulder because it is on the long list. It’s literary fiction/lesbian literature.
🌺🌺
It’s a love story; a story of love, compromise, adjustment, and dishonesty.
Solitude-loving cook on a merchant ship falls in love with a geologist Samsa who gives her the nickname Boulder. Read like a memoir written by Boulder herself.
🌺🌺
Boulder doesn’t want children and Samsa desperately wants a child. Well-handled opposing views situation – An understanding? A compromise? Is there a sense of one-upmanship? Who adjusts more? What are the salient features of healthy relationships? What are the causes of conflicts?
🌺🌺
I enjoyed reading about Samas’s pregnancy and delivery, it was well-written and had vivid descriptions.
🌺🌺
Some quotes from the book:
“THE DESTINATION ALWAYS KILLS THE JOURNEY, AND IF WE HAVE TO REDUCE LIFE TO A STORY, IT CAN ONLY BE A BAD ONE”
🌺🌺
“LANGUAGE IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE AN OCCUPIED TERRITORY. I HAVE THE FEELING I WAS SHACKLED TO IT THE MOMENT I WAS BORN. ONLY LANGUAGE CAN HELP YOU BELONG SOMEWHERE AND MAKE SURE YOU DON’T LOSE YOUR WAY.”
🌺🌺
A short book with simple, eloquent prose that's easy to read.
