Sink or Swim by Stacy Juba

I had this book for a long while before starting it since every time I went to start it something else distracted me. The premise did interest me, otherwise freebie or not, I wouldn’t have downloaded it. But something always kept pulling me away. When I started it I almost gave up but then I read some of the reviews/blurbs, a few of which were from former reality ‘stars’ about how accurate and true it was after life in the reality lime light, so I kept at it until I finished it.

The synopsis is misleading. It made it seem like an And Then There Were None situation with someone picking off all the contestants of the reality show when in actuality it was only two. That may have been more interesting honestly and have it be a different set up rather than what it was. The story broke down to being about a woman who got on a reality show thinking that it would help her financially to launch her dream of opening up a gym and not realizing that by willingly going on a reality show she was trading in the ability to go back to being ‘normal’. Oh and she has a stalker as well.

While it wasn’t horrible it wasn’t great. It was just. It was entertaining enough because I finish to find out who the stalker was but I was left with an underwhelming feeling of “meh”. Cassidy was stupid and hard to sympathize with as a main character. There is no kind way to say it. She kept mentioning to herself and anyone who would listen that she had too much ‘pride’ to hide but she was willing to risk her family’s safety (and that is ultimately what happened) rather than take the precautions to stay safe and alive. That’s not being prideful; that’s being dumb. Even reading all she did about the history of stalkers she was still too stubborn to take the precautions to stay safe. Even her naivety about thinking she could go back to ’normal’ required more suspension of belief than is required for a book.

The love interests were blasé at best. The first one mentioned was a bust from jump since they had a fiancée but even then there was way more flirting and closeness than I (personally) was comfortable with although she did ultimately decide to not pursue a side relationship so that was a bit of a redeeming quality for her. The one that ended being the love interest was pretty flat all around and then ended up being a bit rushed.
Lately I’ve been gauging books by if I would read it again or not. This is not one that I would read again mainly because, again, I did not like the main character that much. The mystery part and figuring out who the stalker was what drove me. I was genuinely surprised by who it was I will admit. But overall it was a book that I read to past the time and I had to force myself to limp through the last few chapters.
