American Dirt
by Jeanine Cummins
I’ve been thinking about the book in the past ten days since I’ve read it and I’ve decided to lower the rating. I already was not overly thrilled with its heavy handed story telling and its constant need to remind you how good and pure these characters are. But reading reviews from Latinx readers has confirmed what I suspected: this book is a simplistic way of making Americans feel good about rooting for good people while not actually being any sort of call to action. I’m going to make an effort to read some nonfiction work by Mexican and other South American Latinx authors. I hope you do the same.
