Any Way the Wind Blows by Rainbow Rowell
5.0

Okay, I powered through this trilogy in one afternoon/evening and during the night once I woke up and couldn't fall asleep again for hours (thanks, Insomnia). I really really liked it! It's Rowell's version of a Chosen One story and in many ways reads as a sort of HP adjacent fanfiction but in its own world. Simon Snow is the Chosen one and the trilogy starts as he enters his last year at his magical school. We meet his best friend Penelope, his girlfriend Agatha, and learn that his "might be a vampire" roommate/enemy Baz hasn't returned to school and may be missing. We learn about the past years through memories and stories. The first book focuses on Simon and Baz calling a truce to solve a mystery and take down the Insidious Humdrum (a mysterious villian that has been plaguing them year after year). The second book occurs in the summer after their first year out of school, when Baz, Simon, and Penny take a road trip across the US to visit and eventually save Agatha. In the third book, there are three main storylines: figuring out how to reverse a curse made by a demon, dealing with an up and coming new "Chosen One", and trying to take care of the goats at their old school. Yup, goats. The ending kind of left things somewhat happy but also open for the characters, which I didn't love in one case but was fine for the others. Fun fact: this trilogy came to be after Rowell wrote Fangirl and this was the fictional story her MC wrote fanfic about! Fun!
