Jane Eyre
by Charlotte Brontë
This was the first classic I ever read as a child, and I remember devouring it within a night. Rereading it as an adult, I don’t know what the fuck I was on. Maybe it’s because I can identify how racist this book is compared to when I was 9 and couldn't formulate actual critical literature thought. I recognize that this was feminist for the time but it was only white feminist. Bertha is portrayed as insane because of her mixed heritage. Rochester was extremely misogynistic and Jane marries him despite her being a strong, independent woman. Overall, it was super misogynistic and racist.
