The Woman in Cabin 10
by Ruth Ware
I have mixed feeling about this one They were parts that were really good and others just so terrible so it's hard to give an overall rating of it, but I choose to go with three stars. The rhythm was great until the last quarter of the book. The storyline was gripping and you really want to know how it will end, so that a good point. The writing style was nothing extraordinary but not below average for a thriller. What make it loose points, and interest, was the characters that were too clichés, way too generic, more or less all the same kind/style of people. First fail. Second... some part were too long, it wasn't necessary to go through the physical description of the woman who disappear every time. She really goes with the same description to ask every characters of the book if they have seen «A young with girls, my size, with black hair, really smooth skin, and sh's pretty.» This question/description goes on and on for like 20 pages. This wasn't useful to the story. And the worst of all twists... those twists were bad all book long. There were a lot of them, let's say ten maybe, and only one of them surprise me. The others were predictable but in the same time stretch so far they just don't seem credible and realistic enough for that kind of book.
*** Rare thing for me but there will be spoilers next***
Lo, the main character, wake up at the beginning of the book with a stranger/thief in her house, this bring nothing to the story in anyway... this seem to traumatize her very bad. But later in the book, she gets capture and sequestrated for almost a week in a dark creepy cave of a boat and this traumatizing experience, seem to be more or less like a small walk in the park to her. What kind of person his more scare of a burglar then being kept prisoners and waiting to be torture or kill in the middle of nowhere!?!
There where many nonsense holes in the storyline like this one, let me just share another. The husband want to kill his wife, with a plot that make no sense in every details, but I won't event go through them... his wife is dying of cancer... so why going through all that... she going to die soon anyway...
And the ending... there is the Hollywood part were she get back to her boyfriend, there happy when to move together, get married, etc. And let's not forget that the woman who try to kill her and kept her prisoners send her a 40 000$ by Internet... big change of heart.
So why still give 3 stars. The first part deserve 3, the middle can have deserve a 3,5 maybe even 4 and the last quarter not more then 2, the book would have been a decent average thriller if it wasn't of the ending, so I didn't want to destroy a book because of the ending but still... Probably the worst ending I read this year (I'm a over 700 books/comics so far). Anyway this review is far too long and I think you get my point!
