The Memory Police
by Yōko Ogawa
dark
reflective
sad
slow-paced
A beautifully written slow and relatively eventless story that kept me constantly uncomfortable. As readers we are catapulted in a dystopian world of which we know nothing about and will learn close to nothing throughout the novel. It is a book about the struggles of maintaining an identity while coping with recurring trauma (memories being deleted by the oppressive Memory Police). Overall, I didn’t give a higher score because although the book kept me thinking about it well after I put it down, I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to be thinking about.
