Loved Marianne and Connell. They had communication issues that I could really relate to. I also really fell for the writing style. I felt like I understood how each character assumed the other understood what they were thinking, and when miscommunications arrived, they were confused with it and didn't want a conflict. I felt that very hard.

I think the book touched a lot on abuse and having Marianne mistreated for so long and how that impacts her future relationships with people and her overall self worth. Connell was so internalized with his anxieties and thoughts, and I really empathized with him. He felt comfortable sharing himself with one person and how Marianne was his own locked vault made him feel safe and loved. She kept his secrets and loved him, which made him want to open up more with her. I definitely thought he should have treated her MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH better in high school, but he eventually grew up and out of it, and apologized for his dicking around.

The ending was so frustrating!! SpoilerWe waited so long, watched them go through so much bullshit and growth just to have him leave. But also I understand. I would never let an opportunity go just because I was living in the same spot as my partner. They could have made long distance work though... It's also hard because we watch them grow up through pretty important years in their lives, but they are only seniors in college. They have the rest of their lives to meet people, but their chemistry and connection to one another feels like it'll have them tethered together throughout their lives, even if they remain good friends and confidants. I wanted to know so much more!! Give me 50 year old Connell and Marianne please!!
