The Catch
by Lauren H. Mae
This ended strongly, but man, was the journey rough at times.
The self-sabotaging and constant negativity of Cat, the protagonist, was really frustrating. She had one bad relationship with a guy (and after the explanation, it didn't even seem all that bad, relative to how she's reacting years later), and she is absolutely convinced every other guy in the world is going to screw her over. It made for a good character arc, but honestly I think it was laid on a little too thick and got annoying to the point of being unrealistic.
Also the third act breakup felt like it went on for almost a quarter of the book?? It was like watching a slow-motion train wreck and it was PAINFUL. This is a short book, but yikes, that dragged on a little too much and it hurt. I felt like Cat and Josh were being tortured a little.
I did really like the book, despite the above complaints. Cat and Josh had really good chemistry, and once they both got over their stuff (especially Cat), they were really good together! They both had good character arcs and learned things about themselves while they were together (and apart), and I think their relationship was really well done. Also the side characters were really fun, and I am excited to read the other two books in the series.
