A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
5.0

This is set in a world where Fae and humans live in divided lands and are mortal enemies. Feyre, a young woman on the verge of starvation, goes hunting and kills a wolf. But this was no ordinary wolf; it was a faerie, and his murder led to unforeseen consequences. The law of the Fae is a life for a life, so Feyre must surrender her life in the human world to live amongst the Fae. Is the Fae as evil as legends, or has everything she ever known about them been entirely wrong?

I started Throne of Glass a few years ago but did not finish it, and I don’t remember why I didn’t like it. So, when ACOTAR came out, I had no interest in it. For years, I ignored it until my friend finally convinced me to try it. Now I am sucked into the world of sexy High Lords and Feyre.

Feyre had to grow up fast to keep herself and her family alive. She had to teach herself everything at a young age, leading to her being strong, independent, and stubborn. You will love her one minute and hate her the next. She is thrown into the world of the Fae and must learn to live amongst the creatures she feared all her life. She is sent to live in the Spring Court with the ridiculously handsome and muscular High Lord, Tamlin, and emissary Lucien. I loved Lucien from the very beginning, but I am also a sucker for a sarcastic character. Tamlin, on the other hand, was never fully invested in me. There was something about him that never felt right to me, like everything was a chess game, and he was moving all the pieces. I got major Darkling vibes from him.

When she gets to the Spring Court, she learns there is a curse on its people. They all are stuck wearing masquerade masks. As she adjusts to her new life and understands the traditions of the Fae, she slowly lets her guard down and realizes that not all of them are evil and that maybe she can even love one. As days turn into weeks, she discovers that darkness also breaks down the court's barriers. This darkness is slowly destroying their world and could spread to the human side. She will do everything she can to stop the darkness, break the Spring Court curse, and save the ones she loves.

And I cannot forget Rhysand, the High Lord of the Night Court. Again, I instantly loved him. Another sarcastic “bad boy” but also “the most beautiful man she ever saw,” he is easily my favorite.

I also feel a little dumb that I didn't realize this was a retelling of Beauty and the Beast.
