anakuroma 's review for:
The Shape of Sound
by Fiona Murphy
Cw: audism, ableism, bullying, sexual assault, semi-graphic description of surgery, mentions of death/cadaver body parts, eugenics.
FIY I am not deaf nor have I had any previous exposure to the Deaf community (hence my wanting to read this book)
I hope everyone, especially us folk who aren't members of the Deaf community read this. I learned so much about audism and ableism I unconsciously carry, both external and internal. Fiona weaves us through her life with ease, power and heart. She dosnt hold back from her inner most thoughts. Though I myself am not deaf, I am disabled in other ways (autistic, ADHD). I could easily empethize with her feelings of loneliness and the pressure one feels to 'mask' their invisible disability.
