The House on Biscayne Bay
by Chanel Cleeton
Thank you @berleypub for the free #gifted copies of this book.
A doomed mansion. Long buried secrets. Two mysterious murders decades apart.
Delivering an engaging slow burn gothic mystery, Cleeton takes on a distinctly different style in The House on Biscayne Bay.
With dual timelines set decades apart, the storyline’s focal point becomes the house itself. Is it haunted? Is it cursed?
There was a cinematic vibrance found in the way each scene was set. From the mansion’s opulent origin to its crumbling demise, Marbrisa became a living entity and full-fledged character within the story.
Suspense gradually built until the atmosphere loomed with eeriness. The gothic vibes were painted with broad strokes creating a horror-lite feel. (Though honestly, I would’ve loved a much darker vibe.)
This was a surprising departure from what I’m used to from this author. Though it was enjoyable, I didn’t find myself as connected to this read as I have her others.
Still, I’m interested to see what she releases next.
