When you leave you must remember to come back for the others. A circle, understand? You will always be Esperanza. You will always be Mango Street. You can't erase what you know. You can't forget who you are.
The House on Mango Street is a collection of memories from Esperanza as she grows up in 'the ugly house on Mango Street'. We get to see Esperanza make friends, grow up and figure out life through little snapshots of her life.
I found this book hard to follow at first without the use of quotation marks but once I started picturing Esperanza telling me the stories it helped me follow along a little better.
I think this book was a unique experience and I don't think I understand why this book is banned. The violence is shown through a naive point of view and makes it's point without being too explicit. It really highlights what it feels like to grow up and widen your view of the world and how confusing it can be sometimes.
I would recommend people to read this book because it is not very long and it's beneficial for everyone to get a taste of what living in a different community and a different lifestyle is like.
