The Song of Achilles
by Madeline Miller
“And as we swam or played, or talked, a feeling would come. It was almost like fear, in the way it filled me rising in my chest, it was almost like tears, in how swiftly it came. But it was neither of those, buoyant where they were heavy, bright where they were dull.“ A love so pure so strong that when you sigh it hurts; when you see your lover it fills you with warmth and if you are seperated it almost feels like a string stretching to long like it could snap. Thats how I felt reading The Song of Achilles.
In this Greek retelling told form the perspective of the exiled prince Patroclus (Pa-tro-clus) we are witness of arisen friendship between him and Achilles (Aristos Achaion, the best of the Greeks). While they mature their friendship blossoms in a deeper bond feeling nothing but love for each other. When Hellen is kidnapped by the Trojans Achilles and Patroclus are summoned to go to war to fulfill their oath. Can the sinister prophecy be evaded?
I absolutely adored this book as it made me feel warm inside and in the next moment made my heart ache. This tender novel flowed because of its beautiful smooth prose. I really fell in love together with these characters as the ominous tragedy half way through the book glared through. The end filled my chest, with fear and I felt broken. An absolute masterpiece which I would highly recommend. Let the fear consume you and dip into it but be aware as it can trigger.
