Things We Lost in the Fire by Mariana Enríquez
4.0
A short story collection very much in conversation with Yoko Ogawa and Samanta Schweblin. The imagery here is incredible, and rivals Ogawa. It plays so much with implication, never quite telling you what happened, leaving you to guess but giving you enough to understand. It was okay—very good as far as horror goes, though. I don’t really have a lot of thoughts; it was perfectly serviceable, though the work this is doing seems largely to operate within the horror genre. “Adela’s House” and “End of Term” are my favorites.
