The Secret Life of Albert Entwistle
by Matt Cain
emotional
funny
hopeful
medium-paced
A sweet story of an older queer person finally coming to terms with their sexuality, that mayyyybe verges on saccharine at times. But it does tackle the issues of homophobia in the 60s/70s (and now) in Britain. If you were a fan of the friendships in A Man Called Ove, you’ll probably like this too, and Albert is less of a grump and more of a shy introvert. I’d often find myself wishing he’d stand up for himself and others sooner, but I know how it can be to be frozen by anxiety and fear. Some of the side characters also felt too stereotypical, and I wish they’d done it as a full cast audiobook!
Graphic: Animal death, Homophobia
Moderate: Emotional abuse, Racism, Xenophobia, Grief
