pagesofali 's review for:

Stoner by John Williams
4.5

it's been like a week since i finished and this review has been long overdue. i kept saying i really wanna write a review about this but i still don't know how to talk about it.

picked this up on a random day but certainly with a huge expectation. it was a hit on booktwt and because booktwt is a space where it's rare to collectively like a certain book (atleast for my moots), i knew i was on to something.

let me just get my kindle for my notes and annotations

first of all why does the person in my copy look like Martin Freeman? not going to lie, because of this, i somehow imagine his face as the face of Stoner. I need to put this out there.

but on the serious note, the sudden awakening of his love for literature was amazing (i'm somehow really amaze by my lack of vocabulary despite being a reader) but really!! i was on my seat, in the middle of the class, and it was so loud. but stoner managed to block everything out. when he had this conversation with sloane in the middle of the class and he was on his feet, grasping the edge of this desk, i was also in my feet, grasping the edge of my desk. it's moments like this that makes me love literature. how a certain number of symbol can make me feel like this? i don't know.

when sloane said

"Mr. Shakespeare speaks to you across three hundred years, Mr. Stoner; do you hear him?"

it's like a moment of peace have pass. after that insane build up, i felt this certain tranquility. i had goosebumps. might be one of my greatest scene in literature.

'The love of literature, of language, of the mystery of the mind and heart showing themselves in the minute, strange, and unexpected combinations of letters and words, in the blackest and coldest print--the love which he had hidden as if it were illicit and dangerous, he began to display, tentatively at first, and then boldly, and then proudly.'

oh how i love being a reader.

on the other half, we have stoner and his relationship dynamic with his wife, which i don't really get. women are so hard to read, i get it now. i think i have this certain inference which i'm not really sure about so i won't be talking about it.

his journey of love was certainly sad... (again how am i a reader) my heart still aches whenever i think about it. was supposed to talk about something but idk anymore it's 4 am in the morning as i am writing this so my head is like not right, i was supposed to study rather than writing this review and i haven't drank my caffeine yet.
