Naked in Death
by J.D. Robb
Naked in Death is one of my favourite books and favourite series. For me, it just gets everything right. The MC, Lieutenant Eve Dallas is a feisty, determined and intelligent lady. She is not afraid to get stuck into the action, she is physically fit, not bothered about her wardrobe/hair/fashion/makeup and manages to excel at what she does. She also develops as a character in each installment, breaking down her own mental barriers, her own issues and delving into her past. Eve is far from a perfect character and those flaws and the mental growth really shine through in this series to make her easy to relate to. Yes, she does fall for a billionaire who can give her the world, but it is always Even that cracks the case, takes the lead and shows a great strength of character. She is not dependent on Roarke, who makes a sassy and sexy love-interest that you can't help but fall for.
Naked in Death offers both mystery, romance, gore and excitement. It is the perfect blend of crime-thriller and romance. The excellent point is that the romance does not detract from the main plot, overshadow the crimes or reduce the excitement that builds. These books aren't long so they have a punchy style, with plenty of action and lots of great secondary characters. The secondary characters do take a while to develop through the series as the main focus is on the MC and her sleuthing skills. However, as we come to have multiple secondary characters regularly featuring behind the scenes they develop personality, depth and lives of their own.
Overall the world building and setting are exciting as we are placed in a futuristic world, with air gliders, fancy tech, new laws and regulations, and a gun ban in America! The retro and "old-days" reflect on our society today and make it easy to connect with those that reminisce which makes this book so accessible. For those that want a in-depth, descriptive setting, however, you won't find that here, which may disappoint some. I don't personally believe this detracts from the value of the book as the quick and easy read style means they're designed to be devoured and digested in short sittings.
This series is almost certainly the perfect rainy-day-read if you want to escape from reality for a little while.
