I Am Nobody's Nigger by Dean Atta
3.5
challenging informative reflective

I read Dean Atta's debut novel, The Black Flamingo, and loved it. I couldn't help but check out some of his poetry. It generally feels very modern but succeeds in introducing topics of race and queer identity. There is a lot of intersection of the human experience specifically as a queer black person. It's refreshing to feel represented in Atta's work as queer person of color myself. The poetry is easy to follow. It is simple, yet eloquent in structure and clear in its messaging. It was an enjoyable read and I would be happy to read more poetry by Atta in the future. This wasn't mind-blowing, but it felt genuine and is better than most modern poetry books I've picked up recently.
