Everything's Eventual
by Stephen King
This collection of short stories was exactly what I needed to start this year off right, each story a different sliver of how the horror masters mind works. Some of these stories are really fucking spooky while others tend to fall short in the scream factor. You can read these straight through or pluck out the goodies. I’ll do you the favor of rating them separately
Autopsy Room Four: 5/5
This story was really fucking spooky and it played on my fear of paralysis and torture. Definitely a great start to the collection.
The Man in the Black Suit : 4/5
This one was pretty creepy (i.e The Man in the Black Suit was creepy) and it has a history of being told throughout many cultures. It's more creepy than scary.
All That You Love Will Be Carried Away : 3/5
I liked this one but it was just really sad. I did admire the satire and main characters POV, but I probably wouldn’t tell someone to start with this story.
The Death of Jack Hamilton : 4/5
I really liked this Depression Era Outlaw story and the characters felt real in their story, their mannerisms and speech were very time relevant. This story wasn’t scary but it was definitely gorey, a classic King gore fest.
In the Deathroom: 4/5
Same as the last, wasn’t very scary but was definitely nerve-wracking and gorey. Imagine being held as a prisoner and your captors don’t look like they’d follow through on their promises of letting you go afterwards. Yeah, this is that story. Except it's better.
The Little Sisters of Eluria: 5/5
This is a Gunslinger adjacent story, yet you don’t have to have read any previous Gunslinger books to understand this story (but it doesn’t hurt). Really creepy characters and even creepier plot lines, it's a wild ride from start to finish.
Everything’s Eventual : 4/5
This story is about the daily monotony of being a ‘contract-killer’. It isn’t as hyped up as it's meant to be, and it might even be the wrong thing to do, but it's a job, with fringe benefits.
L.T’s Theory of Pets : 3/5
This was probably my least favorite because there is (SPOILER) a dog death and the story was left very open ended, but not in a good way.
The Road Virus Heads North : 5/5
This is probably my favorite story of this collection, its creepy, scary, and just really fucking weird. King has a really great way of slowly progressing his character's insanity, but in this short story we get a fast paced mania. Plus, a really creepy painting.
Lunch at the Gotham Cafe : 5/5
This one was really crazy and very real, it felt like it could happen anywhere and thats what is terrifying about this story. Just some rando, losing their marbles, going full blown psychopath.
That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is In French : 4/5
This is King’s take on a version of Hell, reliving a traumatic experience over and over. Except you don’t really know it's happening, and there is nothing you can do to stop it.
1408 : 5/5
No doubt, this story was absolutely fantastic. It was such an eerie experience and despite how short the story is, you still find time to be freaked the fuck out.
Riding The Bullet : 5/5
This one is about death and its inevitability. It's super creepy and makes you really think about just how fragile life really is. Plus, creepy characters.
Luckey Quarter : 4/5
This was kind of depressing but it was fun while it lasted, much like how everyone's luck seems to run out when we need it most.
All of these stories were worth a read and if you want to be creeped out, I say go for it.
