The Hate U Give
by Angie Thomas
Real rating 4.5 ๐
This was a really good read it was evident that the author had an actual understanding of the issues being discussed in a book. Often when books deal with the topic of racism especially when they are topical like The Hate U Give they can miss the mark as they often water down the problem so its easilt digestable. The Hate U Give definetly does not fit into that category. The issues were presented with a brutal honesty and everything in the book I have seen mirrored in real life news reports. I feel like reading this book can give others a really good understanding of the black lives matters movement if they do not do so already. Even if they do it's a great way to see it represented in literature.
However this book humanizes the issue even further Starr is a relatable character even I despite not being the same race as her or suffering from racism in the same way as her could see myself in her. Things feeling you have to be one version of yourself around white people muted turned down and then your true self or well another form of you around your family is really something I understand. Angie Thomas has really written some excellent characters with depth and flaws to each one of them how they react and behave in the novel is highly realistic and i truly understood the choices the characters made.
I only took away 0.5 of a star cos some of the teen speak was a bit .......cringey but not enough to ruin the book.
One of the best books I've read in awhile
