Unfollow: A Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church
by Megan Phelps-Roper
I went into this book expecting something along the lines of The Glass Castle or Educated, both of which I absolutely loved. This memoir went a little slower for me but I’m still glad I read it. As someone who doesn’t consider themself very religious anymore, I found myself skipping over a lot of the Bible passages and retelling of stories that I remember from Sunday school growing up. Megan does a great job of explaining how her family twisted these same stories I grew up learning to justify their radical views. As someone who is both fascinated and repulsed by the views expressed by the Westboro Baptist Church, I found it interesting to get a peek behind the curtain and understand how the organization became what they are known for today. There is no denying the courage it took for Megan to not only leave the church and her family but to also speak so publicly against the practices she was brought up participating in. Thank you Goodreads and FSG for my copy of Unfollow!
