The Shining is one of my favorite movies and I heard the book was pretty different, so I was excited to read this. I really enjoyed it, but I did have some issues. I think some of it was due to the environment I read it in. I was often interrupted and had to put it down and get back to it later.
There is a lot of build up, which I really loved but it also made it slow at times, especially in the first half. I adored Wendy and Danny and their POVs were my favorite. Jacks POV was interesting as well, but I feel like a lot of the time his chapters went on for too long. We would get a long chapter of slow build towards a creepy event, only to switch to another POV and go through the same thing again. It’s very formulaic and that’s how most books go, but sometimes with horror it doesn’t work for me and can be a bit of a let down. Think this book would’ve benefited from maybe 40 less pages.
The slow decent to madness and paranoia that the characters go through was amazing. The internal dialogue that would slowly get darker and more violet as the chapter goes on. So good!! Loved the extra backstory we get with the familial relationships they have with each other, as well as the relationships Wendy and Jack had with their parents. It added so much to the experience.
Overall really enjoyed it, and definitely see myself rereading.
