this was really so refreshing. a look into trauma, growth, trust, family and familial bonds, mental health, and so much more, with monsters who aren't fantastical, but hunters of monsters who are. i've read that the main character, jam is a trans girl and she's also selectively mute and uses sign language frequently, while also having moment of panic and dissociating through the book. this type of representation is so important to see and i really loved it.
i adored this book, honestly, and the plot kept me hooked throughout. mx. emezi, imma need to read all your books at this point because this one had me going through it.
trigger warnings for
child sexual assault, panic attacks, grief, gaslighting, violence, mild body gore(not extremely described)
