How High We Go in the Dark
by Sequoia Nagamatsu
By page 70, I already knew this was going to be a 5-star novel for me…
At face value, it’s a set of chronological short stories from the perspectives of various characters — taking place before, during, and after a pandemic.
But it’s not another heavy-handed environmental warning. This smart novel is more than the depiction of a frightening possible future — it’s a meditation on beauty… it’s a nod to the adaptability and resilience of humanity through connection and community… it’s a cozy meandering character study.
Despite the dominant dystopian themes, the writing is incredibly beautiful and immersive. Despite the ever-changing perspectives, it’s a seamless and cohesive novel. I can’t express enough how much I appreciate the full circle construction. With such heavy subject matter, any kind of closure or clarity is balm to soothe the soul.
