A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
4.0

Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
First of all, I am a sucker for retellings and royalty.
Prince Rhen is cursed by an enchantress that he is denied. Prince Rhen must find a girl to fall in love with him before he becomes a monster and destroys everything he loves in Emberfall. He lives in the same season over and over again and each season has a different girl who is chosen by the Captain of the Guard, Grey.
Harper lives in modern day Washington D. C. and has cerebral palsy. Her mother is dying of cancer. And on top of that her and her brother are trying to pay off their dead-beat father’s debt.
However, one night when Harper is out standing guard for her brother, Harper sees a man with an unconscious woman. Harper goes after the man, but is instead taken to Emberfall.
There Harper must find a way to get home or fall in love with Prince Rhen while she sees the hardships and blights that have been plaguing Emberfall.
I loved the characters and how each character was well developed. Harper definitely grew a lot from beginning to end and went from being whiny to a strong, brave girl. I love how she has a disability and it didn’t stop her from horseback riding, fighting, and helping others.
The world building was just amazing. I could imagine how Emberfall looked like and wished I could be in the palace, minus when Rhen is a monster.
I docked a half a star because there were a few places that dragged.
I highly recommend this book. There is a sequel, however this book wraps up nicely and doesn’t have a huge cliff hanger, so if you want a satisfying ending, then this is the book for you.
