This book is an interpretation of a little known fairy tale. It was completely and utterly charming; the author drew her own whimsical and enchanting illustrations, and the book is simple but full of whimsy and deeper meaning. While the book does significantly soften and simplify the often harsh edges of traditional fairy tales, it doesn't completely ignore its roots. It would be a wonderful addition to any child's book collection, and is honestly worth reading even as an adult.
