Nine Nasty Words: English in the Gutter: Then, Now, and Forever
by John McWhorter
challenging
informative
medium-paced
Nine Nasty Words was hilarious and informative. It’s a mixture of history, linguistics, popular media, and comedy. McWhorter talks about how profanity has evolved from religious words to body parts to slurs; some of the nine words are hell, damn, c-nt, fuck, n-gger etc. The layout of the book is enjoyable and it’s a quick, witty read.
