One Dark Window
by Rachel Gillig
I inhaled this book in a day - it was very gripping, engaging, and darkly atmospheric. The twin representation was frustratingly trite, and the other female characters besides the protagonist felt similarly one-note. The world and the magic system felt much more compelling; the cards are fascinating, and I would've liked to see more contrast with the magic - opportunities for power in ways that weren't so stark or connected with a form treason and/or violence. Still, I would recommend this as an exciting read for fantasy readers that don't mind a dark world.
