My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh
5.0

So strange & perfect. The nostalgia. The blasé 20-something. The all-too-relatable desire to press pause on life (especially in NYC) and return when one desires in the future. The tongue-in-cheek style was exactly what I wanted.

A 24 year old woman narrator wants to check out of life to rest/relax for a year. Both her parents died while she was in college so she has an inheritance to rely on (after she is fired from her gallery job for being caught napping a few too many times in the closet and letting her appearance go) so she can afford her coffee and pills and random hazy shopping sprees. The writing flawlessly depicts her few conscious hours as she lies to her psychiatrist, barely tolerates her one girl friend, covets her ex-boyfriend, and above all— desires extended periods (days) of blackout sleep.
