Mexican Gothic
by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
The story takes place during the 1950s and follows Noemí Taboada as she travels to High Place, an old and ruined mansion set in the Mexican countryside, after she gets a disconcerting letter from her recently wed cousin, Catalina. While at High Place, Noemi is plagued with haunting dreams, chilling whispers, and the unsettling feeling that the house is more than it appears.
The novel explores race relations between European settlers and Native people, tackles the aftermath of post colonialism, and challenges the theory of eugenics through a feisty and brilliantly strong willed female protagonist. Noemí’s curiosity leads her on an adventure to discover the secrets buried within the walls of High Place; secrets that were kept hidden for a reason.
If you like atmosphere reads with classic gothic tropes, you’ll love Mexican Gothic with it’s beautiful and chilling prose, complex characters, and suspenseful storyline that will leave you speechless.
