Demon Copperhead
by Barbara Kingsolver
An incredible novel that highlights life in Appalachia, specifically southwest Virginia, and how the opioid epidemic hit rural America. Fueled by the pharmaceutical companies and pill mills. Barbara Kingsolver does an eloquent job of describing the beautiful scenery of the region, from the coal mines now abandoned, to the colors of the leaves changing in fall and the picturesque journey down the rural roads of the region. Demon's description of city life in Tennessee was very reminiscent of a personal favorite, "The Dollmaker" by Harriet Arnow. Perhaps my affection for this novel is because of my personal ties to Virginia by birth, and attending college at Virginia Tech, going with friends and former graduates of Richlands high to farm parties.
This is a book that you will want to read again and again, and deserves a spot amongst the classics like Dickens "A Tale of Two Cities".
