I was so excited for this book. I wanted to adore it. And there is parts I do. Great world building, has a lot of the usual high fantasy court plots and I adore me some Asian inspired fantasy. But... I can’t seem to understand any of the decisions that the lead makes. I don’t understand her and I don’t feel like that’s on purpose. I think we are truly meant to see why she is the way she is and all I see is a child who everyone loves for no reason. I don’t get her and literally all the other characters are more interesting. I want to hear about Shiro. I want to hear about literally anyone else. It’s a pity, honestly, because this is one of those books with so much promise.
