This is just a slim little novella so I don’t want to say too much about it because I feel that will spoil it. It’ll only take you a day to read at just 120 pages, so if you fancy tackling a little translated lit during your lockdown, this could be a perfect contender! Márquez’s writing is always stunning, and I was happy to see Gregory Rabassa as the translator at the start, as he is responsible for the stunning translation of One Hundred Years!
.
It’s simply a tale about morality and responsibility. One man’s death in a small town is, surprise surprise, foretold, and yet no one in the town does a thing to stop the honour killing. Although I found the journalistic style a little repetitive occasionally, I was mostly impressed with the prose. The ending also ramps it up a lot - the tension builds quite slowly throughout and the ending made my jaw drop with its intensity.
.
Definitely recommend for a rainy afternoon in lockdown.
