I wish I had more to offer as far as explanation goes. But frankly, this book was just bad.
Way too much pointless description. It was pages and pages and pages of description of how sad that first town was. And then when it came time to actually fight the beast, we barely had any of it. Would have been way better of the book had started midway through the battle with the Squarg and then all that other stuff could have been explained as it happened. Through dialogue with the kid, and what Kallie sees as she returns the kid to town.
It was super unclear how old she is or when "present day" is. The first time we go to the past. She's 12. Then we find out that it's been 6 years since she escaped. But we don't know when she escaped. Then we find out she escaped at 22. So I guess that makes her 28 now... I wouldn't say she acts that age. But here in "present day" she meets some dude with purple eyes and I have to assume he'll be the MMC. I guess I don't understand the nonstop time jumps.
Also, I know this is supposed to be a spicy book and so here at the 20% mark they felt like they needed to add something in. But boring, unimaginative sex with a character we have no investment in is not good. I have to assume this is a fated mates situation because he made her say she's his a bunch of times. The sex was probably supposed to be vaguely kinky since she kept telling us he was dominating her, but really he was just being cocky and she was reacting just how he hoped. It was a really weird immature interaction for a grown woman.
