My habit of not reading blurbs backfired on me here. I went into Brit(ish) expecting more pure memoir, when it literally states right there in the blurb that it melds memoir and history! It was still very good, and I’d definitely recommend it still especially if you’re new to Britain’s imperial history and the state of racism in Britain. I enjoyed Hirsch’s personal memoir sections more, as I felt a lot of the history stuff I’d read before in other books, and since there were a lots of quoted passages from other works, it felt a little like a uni essay. I felt like Hirsch’s writing came more alive when she was relaying her personal experiences, whereas the history sections, while interesting & important in terns of subject matter, were a little cut and dry.
