I enjoyed this one. There was so much more at stake and a lot more action in this one. This book is heavily based on the vows that were taken and the ramifications of those. There’s several going on between Peter and Beatrix but also the other ladies. They are always questioning whether they feel or do something because they want to or because of the vows. I was hoping that we would get more explanations about the vows in this book and we do.

I loved the fact that Beatrix becomes her own in this book. She’s learning that she has power and starts practicing it. Not only that, she’s totally and completely driven to save her sister. It’s her only goal and it makes it even more intense. She’s constantly putting her life in danger for Lydia.

It was so good to see Peter come into his own too. He starts to care about the town and the people in it. He is slowly coming out of his shell and it’s so great to see. This town turned their backs on him but he doesn’t put that against anyone. He doesn’t come back with a vendetta or for revenge and I appreciate that.

This was a great follow-up to Subversive. It’s hard to put down and the flow is great that it makes it seem like you are turning pages quickly. The fact that Cowley can have such a heavy political book, but still make characters and their relationships shine, is a great accomplishment!
